The primers are fine, so pressures are fine, but there is too much residual pressure in the barrel when the bolt is trying to unlock. If you had a CAR gas length barrel cut down to 10.5 inches, likewise, there's the problem. ![]() From the pictures I find of your upper it looks like it is CAR length also, and if it is CAR gassed I can pretty much tell you right now that the gas length is the problem. Did you buy this upper factory made or put it together yourself and what is the gas length on your upper? Marty always used a handgun length gas with barrels shorter than 14 inches and I know RR did use CAR length on their 12.5 inch barrels but I do not know what they use on the 10.5 inch barrels. Obviously something isn't right with the SD spread I'm seeing shot-to-shot. I'm concerned about even tip-toeing into over pressure territory, but I would like to retain velocity as I intend to use the rounds for hog hunting. However, the velocities I'm getting (even out of my shorty barrel) seem a little on the low side. There isn't a ton of load data out there for the SOCOM and this powder / bullet combo, but from what I was able to glean from other guys posts online this seemed like a reasonable load (saw one or two guys claiming they used 34 grains). There is a faint ring of carbon around the firing pin hole on the bolt and some brass flecks on the bolt face. Providing the chronograph is accurate, this gives a mean average of 1440 FPS with a SD of 67.5 FPS and an ES of 172.Īlthough I had initially loaded up 15 rounds, I stopped after the first five as I could see swirl marks on the case head and was concerned about possible over pressure. Results over the chronograph are discouraging. My upper is a 10.5 inch short barreled rifle from RRA. The projectiles are Hornady 350 grain flat points over 31.0 grains of H110, loaded to the cannelure for a COL of 2.04 inches. Brass is Starline with CCI 350 large magnum pistol primers. I'm using Lee Dies (including a Lee Factory Crimp Die). I've been reloading for a few years now, but am just getting started with 458 SOCOM.
